The Sara Henze Art Grant Fund

In memory of Sara Henze (1968-2010), the well-loved La Manzanilla resident, an art grant fund has been established for La Manzanilla students pursuing personal development in the performing or fine arts.

Sara was born in a small town in Germany and moved to La Manzanilla in 1995.  She raised her two daughters and lived a full life before becoming ill and passing away of cancer in 2010.

Sara’s life was a work and expression of art.  As a child Sara was drawn most to her father, the artist Wolfgang Henze, with whom she discovered her love for painting and writing. He also was the family member who most frequently visited her in Mexico.

Before coming to La Manzanilla Sara studied one year of visual arts in a renowned University of Arts in Köln.   During her first years in México Sara continued painting passionately and later also did other kinds of crafts such as painted glass, jewelry, and art with gourdes.

Sara cared deeply about her daughters and would do anything to help them achieve their goals. She worked hard to give them every opportunity for developing their creativity, including sending them to extra-curricular art classes.  Both daughters are pursuing studies and art careers in film making and dance.

Sara always encouraged people to follow their dreams. The Sara Henze “Wings” art scholarship fund will continue keeping her wish alive and helping the young generation pursue their artistic development.

How Does It Work?

The Sara Henze art fund is an open fund where people who knew and loved Sara, or people who share a love of the arts, can donate to support the artistic development of La Manzanilla youth.  Donations of any amount can be made to this fund through Teachers Without Borders (for a tax deduction within the U.S.), through PayPal, or through making a cash donation.  Please see our Donations page.

Who Can Apply?

Youth from La Manzanilla ages 12-18 can apply for a grant (from 2000 pesos – 8000 pesos) to attend art classes or workshops.  They will need to submit an application and provide a letter describing the class or workshop they would like to attend and how this will help them with their artistic pursuit and future goals.  All budding artists can apply, but priority will be given to underprivileged youth. Upon completing their art class or program, the selected student will submit a report on their project to the Board of Directors and others associated with the Fund.

A special thanks to Sandy Hill & Don Binkley for setting up this fund and to Mayan and Miriam Henze, Sara’s daughters, for their support, enthusiasm and assistance.
